Dec. 19, 2018
For many of our students living in Foster and McNutt, as well as some other residence halls, this semester has included disruptions due to remediation work in some residence hall rooms. I appreciate your patience as we worked through this process to get your residence hall returned to the standards we expect for our student residents.
I'm happy to report that we have completed all air sampling and remediation work in Foster and McNutt. On Dec. 15, our teams initiated work inspecting, cleaning and air sampling all rooms in Teter Boisen, Elkin and Rabb. Leaders have been planning for this work in Teter for two weeks and have a solid, efficient plan that we believe will allow us to complete all work during the first half of the break and therefore minimize any disruption to student residents.
You may have also seen that the IU Board of Trustees recently approved an accelerated renovation schedule for Foster and McNutt. While both of these residence halls had planned renovations in the next couple of years, we will now be able to begin those renovations in summer 2019 with the goal of re-opening Foster and McNutt for the 2020-2021 academic year. I'm delighted that our students will soon have more options for updated and renovated housing. The residential campus experience enhances student success and supports close and diverse friendships and lifelong connections to the institution and the state.
Our actions continue to be guided by the values of health, safety, academic progress and transparency. Again, I am deeply sorry for the struggle that has been part of some of our students' experiences during the fall semester. We continue to work through areas of concern as they arise and believe that there will be significantly less disruption to our students in the spring semester.
