If a student or parent has a mold concern, please complete the Mold Concern Report Form. This will directly generate a work ticket for the room to be inspected and remediated if necessary.
I'm a student and feel that my academic performance has been affected by issues related to mold in my room and/or mold remediation. Will my professors allow my course absences to be excused or project deadlines extended?
Faculty have the ultimate authority over course work, project deadlines and absences in their classes. Faculty and staff have been asked by their respective deans to work with students experiencing concerns related to concerns of mold.
Additionally, IU's Student Advocates Office can help students navigate this process. A student may also contact the Dean of Students Office at firstname.lastname@example.org for support in notifying their faculty directly if they believe their ability to attend class or prepare for their academics has been impacted by this issue.
The Health Center is available for any student exhibiting symptoms relating to mold exposure. Students may call 812-855-7688 to make an appointment or go online to the health center's website and click the tile labeled "Make an Appointment" on the homepage.
If scheduling online, please select for your medical reason "Mold-related symptoms" during the scheduling process. If calling to make an appointment, please be sure to inform the scheduler that your visit is related to the mold found in your residence hall.
Office visits due to mold-related symptoms, treatments like antihistimines and other over-the-counter medications from the health center's pharmacy and CAPS services will be provided to students free of charge.
The Health Center is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you should have any questions after hours, please feel free to contact the center's after hours call service at 812-855-4011, option 5.
While someone with the common cold and someone with a mold allergy may show similar symptoms, the biggest differences are that fever is rarely associated with an allergy and symptoms stemming from a mold allergy persist over time. Symptoms of a cold typically resolve in 7 to 10 days, while a cough, congestion, or sneezing due to a mold allergy will linger longer.
If symptoms like sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, cough, or itchy/watery eyes last longer than the length of a typical cold (7-10 days), we recommend you visit the health center. Students who have a known mold allergy, a history of asthma or are immunocompromised for any reason may have more severe symptoms and should visit the health center or their physician sooner if they experience severe symptoms like shortness of breath or wheezing occur.
I have concerns about virus strains like Adenovirus leading to serious illness. Is there a link between mold and Adenovirus?
Adenovirus is a very common cause of sore throats, conjunctivitis and simple upper respiratory tract infections (colds) in children and adults. In highly immunocompromised hosts, adenovirus can cause pneumonia, but this is relatively rare. There is no relationship between this common viral infection and mold.
Expenses will be reimbursed for any student residing in McNutt or Foster halls who sought medical treatment for any of the following medical conditions or symptoms associated with mold exposure:
Upper respiratory infections, allergic reactions, asthma, lung symptoms such as coughs, wheezing, shortness of breath, runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, itchy throat/eyes/and watery eyes, skin conditions such as rashes , hives or eczema. Claims for medical care reimbursement should be sent to email@example.com.
Claims for medical conditions other than these will be reviewed by a medical doctor to determine whether that particular student’s health condition could be associated with or exacerbated by exposure to mold. Claims for medical care reimbursement should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We understand that you may have taken specific steps to replace personal items given air quality concerns. Please contact Mitch Druckemiller at email@example.com with your specific request.
Laptops which were discarded prior to Oct. 18, 2018 will be reimbursed with a receipt for the cost of the laptop and with the original laptop being released to IU for salvage (after it has been wiped clean of any personal information). Laptops replaced after Oct. 18, 2018 will not be reimbursed – they will be professionally cleaned to ensure no mold remains on the laptop.
All credits were made to the impacted students' accounts the week of Oct. 22. If you are a student who receives financial aid, check your status on One.IU and search for “View/Manage My Financial Aid Information” to see if any adjustments were made. Questions? This credit is in recognition of the fact that the rooms in Foster and McNutt were not what our students or IU expected, and IU therefore could not ensure the quality of our students' experience in those residence halls this semester.
Institutional funds for students that are not wages and not loans are considered scholarships. "Scholarship" is the term IU uses for undergraduate awards. This ensures compliance with IRS rules and the requirement that any educational benefits paid to a student, regardless of the source, be considered in determination of eligibility for federal financial aid.
Per IRS rules, the credit amount will be in box 5 on the 1098T. Typically scholarships that do not exceed qualified educational expenses, as defined by the IRS, are not taxable. Questions related to educational tax credits or other tax issues should be directed to the IRS or your tax preparer.
Residential Programs & Services have had numerous personal interactions with students and parents in person, via phone and through email regarding individual situations and reports. In addition, comprehensive emails have been sent to parents of students living in Foster and McNutt detailing the current situation and prevention/remediation actions.

Laundry and cleaning services available
My clothing and other items need to be cleaned due to mold concerns. How do I clean them? Can I be reimbursed?
Items with no signs of visible mold: The Indiana State Department of Health recommends normal laundering of clothing and bed linens, ensuring the items are completely dry before removing them from the dryer. Items should not be air dried. For delicate or expensive items, consider using a professional dry cleaning service.
Items with visible mold: If the item has visible mold, it should be placed in a clear plastic bag provided by RPS. Bags are available at the residence hall’s center desk. Students should list/itemize what’s in the bag and take a photo of the contents of the bag for their records. Bags, with the items and list, should be taken to the residence hall’s center desk.
Laundry: Teter, McNutt and Foster students will not be charged for use of washing machines and clothes dryers at the residence halls. Crimson Card accounts for all students in Teter, McNutt and Foster were set for a maximum usage of $150. No money was actually deposited in the accounts. It is a credit that will start as a $0 balance and goes up as the students use the credit.
The free laundry plan will be in effect until the end of the calendar year (2018) and will continue to be monitored to ensure it is meeting student needs.
If you had items cleaned prior to notification of this service, please provide receipts for the cleaning and you will be reimbursed.
IU is working with Flip Laundry Services to support residents of Foster, McNutt, and Teter. Reusable laundry bags will be available at the front desks of each residence hall, and more are scheduled to be delivered as soon as possible.
After bagging laundry and filling out the ID tag, bring the bag to the residence hall front desk. Please make sure your bag is added to the list of bags to be laundered and that any special instructions are noted, and any specialty items are in separate bags. Dry cleaning needs to be in a separate bag than regular laundry and should be noted as dry cleaning.
If an item has visible mold, seal in a plastic bag with instructions. These will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Bags are picked up daily at 4 p.m. and returned in 4-5 business days, unless specialty care is needed.
IU is covering the cost of the laundry service.
My residence hall is out of laundry bags/ID tags for Flip Laundry Services. Can I still use the service?
Yes, place your laundry in garbage bags and create a tag with your building name, room number, name, and email address. Flip Laundry Services has ordered new laundry bags and tags and will deliver them to the residence halls as soon as possible.
Clothing: All normal washing machine items will be the easiest to handle. Items that require dry cleaning MUST be placed in a separate bag and labeled. If not separated, these items will be washed with regular laundry items. Clothes that are dry cleaned will be returned separately from the bulk laundry.
Specialty materials(wool, silk, leather, etc.): Items will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and either cleaned by Flip Laundry Services or subcontracted to a company that handles specialty materials. Items should be bagged separately (a garbage bag is fine in this case) and tagged with a note stating the type of specialty cleaning required. Additional time may be required for these types of items.
Bedding, comforters, etc.: Unless the material is a type that can only be spot cleaned (memory foam, for example), bedding is eligible for the laundry service.
Area rugs: If the rug is machine washable, Flip Laundry Services will clean it. If the rug is not machine washable, Flip Laundry Services will find a subcontractor to handle the cleaning. Additional time may be required for these types of items.
No. In order to have costs covered by IU, laundry must be left at the front desk of the residence halls. Any bags dropped off directly at Flip Laundry Services will not be considered as part of the remediation effort and standard cleaning prices will be charged.
A station is set up in the McNutt North dining room through Thursday, Nov. 15. Please call or text 317-649-0258 to schedule a drop off time for the item(s). Students will receive a receipt and an estimated time for pick up when dropping off their items. For larger items, students can schedule a time for crew members to pick up the item(s) from their residence hall room.
Students are welcome to remain at the station while their items are cleaned. It takes 30-90 minutes per item.
The cleaning process includes:
- Testing the item for proper functionality
- Using a HEPA vacuum to remove any mold spores from the external surfaces of the item
- Cleaning the exterior of the item with an Anti-Microbial Cleaner
- Opening/Disassembling the product to gain access to control boards, etc.
- Inspecting the unit to ensure that there is no mold-related damage present
- Performing the same steps above to the interior components
- Re-assembling the units
- Final testing
- Returning the items the students
